About Alps Shoji Ltd.
Alps was one of Japan's premier producers of battery-operated and clockwork tin toys for the American market. Much of the output was sold in America under importers' brands — Cragstan, Rosko and Linemar among them — as well as under the Alps name, and included beautifully lithographed cars, planes, and robots. The Alps Remote Control Robot is among the most sought-after postwar tin toys. Tinplate production wound down in the early 1970s as Japanese labour costs rose.
History of Alps Shoji Ltd.
Alps Shoji was one of the strongest of the Tokyo tin-toy houses that grew out of the occupation-era export trade, and it distinguished itself on mechanical ambition. Where much Japanese tinplate relied on a simple friction flywheel, Alps built elaborate battery-operated toys with multiple sequenced actions — a bear that poured and drank, a drummer whose arms and head moved independently, space vehicles with lit domes and rotating antennae.
Very little of the output reached the domestic Japanese market. Most was made for American and European importers and reached buyers under a distributor's name — Cragstan, Rosko, Linemar and others — so the same toy can appear with several different box brands over an identical Alps-marked body. The company continued into the era of licensed and electronic toys, but its reputation rests on the battery-operated pieces of the 1950s and 1960s.
