History of Bliss Manufacturing Co.
Bliss made the finest American lithographed paper-on-wood toys of the nineteenth century. The technique was straightforward and the execution was not: a sturdy wooden carcass was covered in colour-lithographed paper printed with architectural and decorative detail far more elaborate than could have been painted at any sensible price. The result was dollhouses with brickwork, stonework, stained glass and shingles, all in printed paper over pine.
The range extended well beyond dollhouses to boats, trains, stables, building blocks, forts and folding toys. Bliss dollhouses in particular are now regarded as the definitive American Victorian dollhouse, and their architectural styling — turned porch posts, gables, ornamental trim — is a reliable record of period domestic taste.
The company was sold to Mason & Parker in 1914, and paper-on-wood construction did not survive long against lithographed tin, which offered similar colour with far greater durability.
