About Doepke Model Toys
Charles William Doepke produced beautifully accurate 1:12 scale pressed-steel replicas of real construction equipment. Doepke models of Euclid earth movers and American LaFrance fire trucks are considered among the finest pressed-steel toys ever made.
Founding
The Doepke brothers of Rossmoyne, Ohio, who set out after the war to make toys that were accurate scale models of specific construction machines rather than generic trucks.
History of Doepke Model Toys
Doepke's "Model Toys" were built under licence from the makers of the real equipment — Barber-Greene, Adams, Jaeger, Unit, American LaFrance — and modelled closely enough to serve as showroom pieces. A Doepke Barber-Greene loader has a working conveyor; the Adams road grader has correct blade articulation; the Unit crane has a working boom and cable. They were made largely of heavy sheet steel and cast metal, and they were expensive.
The line found an audience among adults and among the equipment dealers themselves, which is precisely what limited it. Priced far above a pressed-steel Tonka or Structo, Doepke models were never going to be volume sellers, and once cheaper competitors matched the appearance at a fraction of the cost the business had nothing left to defend.
Production ended in 1959, leaving the most accurately modelled American construction-toy line of its era, and one of the few whose subjects can be identified down to the specific real machine.
