About Hafner Manufacturing Co.

Hafner produced affordable lithographed tin toy trains, competing in the lower-price segment of the market against Lionel and American Flyer. Their lithographed O-gauge trains were sold through Woolworth's and were many children's first train set. Wyandotte acquired Hafner in 1951.

Founding

William Frederick Hafner, who had already designed clockwork toys for the Chicago trade and whose train mechanism became the basis of American Flyer before he set up on his own account.

History of Hafner Manufacturing Co.

Hafner's place in toy-train history is larger than his company's size suggests. He developed a clockwork train mechanism in the early 1900s and partnered with W.O. Coleman of the Edmonds-Metzel hardware company to produce it — that arrangement became American Flyer. When Hafner and Coleman parted, Hafner started again under his own name in 1914.

The resulting product was the best cheap clockwork train in America: lithographed tin O-gauge sets, sold under names like the Overland Flyer, with reliable mechanisms and bright printing at a price that put a complete train set within reach of families who could not consider Lionel. Hafner stayed with clockwork long after competitors had moved to electric, which was a deliberate positioning rather than a failure to keep up — clockwork needed no transformer and no wiring.

The company was sold to All Metal Products, maker of Wyandotte, in 1951, and the tooling passed on again from there.

Identifying & Dating Hafner Manufacturing Co. Toys

  • Look for "HAFNER" lithographed on locomotive cab sides or tenders, and lithographed road names such as "Overland Flyer" on the cars.
  • Clockwork rather than electric drive in American O-gauge tinplate is a strong Hafner indicator, though Marx also made clockwork sets.
  • Later production under All Metal Products may carry Wyandotte-era markings on Hafner-pattern tooling.

Collector's Notes

  • Complete boxed sets with locomotive, cars, track and key are what the market pays for; loose cars are common and inexpensive.
  • Lithography is the condition driver, and these sets were used by children who could not afford a replacement. Rust and scratching through the printing are normal and heavily discounted.
  • Check that the clockwork motor winds and runs, and that the key is present — original keys are frequently missing and reproductions are obvious to a specialist.
