History of Murray-Ohio / Steelcraft
Murray Ohio and Steelcraft together account for a very large share of the American pedal cars that survive. Steelcraft, of Murray, Ohio, made pressed-steel pedal cars and ride-ons from the 1920s, and its 1930s streamliners — the Airflow, based on the Chrysler, and the rocket and aeroplane designs — are among the most sought-after American juvenile vehicles ever made.
The company became Murray Ohio Manufacturing and expanded into bicycles, wagons, tricycles and later lawn mowers, a diversification that eventually made mowers and bicycles the main business. Murray pedal cars of the 1950s and 1960s — the Champion, the fire trucks, the Pursuit Plane — were made in enormous quantities and sold through the biggest American retailers.
Murray also built pedal cars and bicycles for store brands, so a great many unbadged juvenile vehicles from this period are Murray products under someone else's name. The company moved to Brentwood, Tennessee and continues in outdoor power equipment; the pedal-car era ended as liability concerns and plastic ride-ons displaced pressed steel.
