Tinkertoy is one of the purest ideas in toy design: a wooden spool drilled with holes around its circumference and through its centre, and a set of dowel rods that fit them. From those two components, plus a few pulleys and a string, an enormous range of structures and working mechanisms can be built.
Pajeau and his partner Robert Pettit could not interest buyers at first and resorted to a piece of guerrilla marketing that has become part of the toy's legend: they built motorised Tinkertoy displays in Chicago drugstore windows at Christmas 1914, and the resulting demand sold a million sets within two years.
Tinkertoy became a permanent American fixture and is in the National Toy Hall of Fame. The company sold to Spalding in 1952, and the brand later passed to Questor, Playskool, Hasbro and eventually K'NEX, which continues it — with the classic wooden version still available alongside plastic equivalents.
